The Academic Enhancement Center's professional writing tutors provide academic tutorial support to students with all aspects of the writing process while mentoring them to become independent learners. In addition, tutors assist the department by presenting workshops on writing-related topics and study skills, participating in and facilitating professional development sessions, and assisting with promotional events such as new student orientation. Finally, professional tutors mentor peer tutors by example to help them grow as professionals in the field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide face-to-face and online tutorial assistance in the AEC
  • Participate in the TIC-TAC-TOE tutoring program
  • Create and present academic workshops for students
  • Participate in/present professional development sessions
  • Mentor peer tutors by demonstrating professional behavior
  • Assist with AEC promotional events
  • Engage in AEC student flow management procedures
  • Attend and/or present at offsite or on-campus workshops or professional development opportunities to enhance the program’s efficiency
  • Attend training and other required meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4 Year / Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Must have a grade of B or better in coursework related to the subject to be tutored
  • Ability to work occasional non-standard hours (evening and weekend shifts)
  • Prior tutoring, mentoring, or teaching experience
  • Demonstrated strong customer service skills
  • Ability to collaborate with supervisors, colleagues, and students regularly
  • Must be able to handle confidential information

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate Degree in related field
  • Tutoring/teaching experience in higher education
  • Experience working with underprepared students from diverse backgrounds

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Position may require local travel. Ability to lift and carry files and materials. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone and in writing. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
